Gregorian is a project conceived by German music producer Frank Peterson. Peterson worked previously with Enigma, the band who took Gregorian chant to worldwide prominence with their 1990 single "Sadeness Part 1".
Gregorian's debut album, 1991's Sadisfaction carried on Enigma's pop-orientated theme, mixing chants into the tracks, but it proved to be unsuccessful and the project would have to wait nine years until its next incarnation.
In the year 2000 the project was re-launched, this time with 12 singers doing Gregorian-style covers of popular songs such as "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Sounds of Silence". The Masters of Chant album began a series which reached its seventh volume in 2007. There was a slight departure in 2004 with the release of Gregorian - The Dark Side which featured darker themes than previous releases with covers by artists including Metallica and Nine Inch Nails.
